With the glory of beauty comes the destiny of being oppressed. Tamil Nadu, the beautiful state of India had faced oppression from multi rulers. The three great rulers Chera, Chola and Pandiya ruled the state for more years in a glorious way than any other kings. In fact, the meaning of “Tamil Nadu” means a country of Tamil people. Therefore, the three Kings almost developed it as a nation doing great welfare to people and their language. Music was given recognition during their rules in a very great number. Though music did exist in Tamil Nadu even before such Kings, a proper organization of music groups was made during their time.

One has to dig deep into the ancient literature to know about the past life of Tamil people. Almost all people who lived in Tamil Nadu were into developing culture and recording them for the future generations to develop them. The Sangam literature is the ancient Tamil literature, which speaks about the music of ancient Tamil Nadu. Some of the best music dedications are the Pathupaatu and Ettuthogai. People dint only sing with music, but narrated even stories with music. One such great epic was the Silappathikaram. “Cheyyulum, paatum tamilarku perumayam!” was the most heart-held principle for most Tamilians. Many pomes like Aganaanooru, puranaanooru, kalithogai were all developed based on normal lifestyle of people. They explained child growth, living, farming, love, devotion through music.

The famous trinity gems of Tamil music war Appar, Thiru Gnana Sambandar and Maanikavasagar. These three not only established a great historical evidence for ancient music, but they have left behind their works for the younger generation to research and learn the extremities and complexities of Tamil music. Things that require a lot of research today were so common in ancient Tamil Nadu.

The best form of expression is music. This is proved in Tholkaapiyam. It explains the landscapes of the state and in turn implies five different moods of people. Each of the lands in the state used different instruments and each of these instruments were in turn used to simulate different musical experience. It explains the music literature and details the Paatu Vannam, Asiriapaatu, Adivarai and more. These are the benchmarks for the following generations to innovate composition in music.

Even the simplest musical instrument was capable of producing heart attracting music for the talent of the musicians was great.
