Kolaveri = Kolai + veri. Kolai means "murder" and veri means "the urge" to do it.

kolaveri is actually two words put together "Kolai" (Murder) + "Veri" (Mania) so putting these two words "kolai veri" in together now change the required language to tamil, the word becomes something of as "homicidal mania”.
The exact meaning of word "Kolaveri" is an urge to kill someone or a deep anger to kill someone. But in slang terms it is directed upon someone who did something really wrong or bad. For instance "edhukku da intha kolaveri?" or "why this Kolaveri?" which is translated as "Why did u do such a bad thing?" or "Why are you really angry at me?" Kolaveri in Tamil cinema is more of comical where the comedian Vadivelu makes use of the kolaveri word as a comedy word. So Tamils when they hear this they take it as fun word.
The rest of the words are in English and can be easily understood. The lyrics of Kolaveri Di are about the feelings of a boy who has failed in love. The "Soup Song" and "Soup Boys" mentioned in the song refer to "Love failure Song" and "Boys who failed in love" respectively. I loved the song, not for its lyrics but for its beats. Yes, I think being simple or being real is “IN”. Chetan Bagat, who keeps his language simple and easy to understand in all his books is a huge success in India.
In an Interview, the singer/lyricist/actor Dhanush himself said that he came up with this non- sensical song when he had some idle time. In India, all songs are part of the movies and this song is a part of the movie storyline where the girl dumps him.. the reference to the white skinned girl is strictly movie based and does not reference all white skinned girls..

Tamils are obsessed with this song because they have heard hindi songs and the praise for hindi songs ever since they were born. now they r acting like a beggar who manages to get a 1 rupee coin and gets excited. i think they will want a separate country called "kolaveri" now coz they r not indians they r the south indians-d racist discriminators..:):)
In chennai , you would see this word often being used to express anger (even in the average scenarios , small arguments , disagreement ) ... Such that being used doesnt often indicate that you are in a murderous rage - just plain anger/frustration.
