Tamil folk songs


Folk songs are very popular in the countryside states. Tamil Nadu is one such countryside state with lot of lush green planes. Since the state lies in the Deccan plateau, it has very good vegetation and there are many villages. Villages have given lot of space for the folk songs to develop. 

In contrast to the status of folk songs in other countries and in other states, in Tamil Nadu it is developed to a stage of claiming a separate stream of education. Most of the students interested in Folk songs all around the world and in North India come to Tamil Nadu to learn about the Village folk music here. Professionals who have researched provided their thesis on these folk songs. They have a separate culture too develop such folk songs. Some of the famous Tamil Folk songs singers are Navaneetha Krishnan and Pushapavanam Kuppusamy. They have revived the folk songs to such an extent that it soon touched the university gates.


Tamil Folk Song
 Folk songs vary based on the location in which it is sung. Tamil Nadu being a land of hills, plains and dry lands have different inhabitants. These inhabitants use their own traditions in the folk songs. Rural tribes in the hilly regions of the state sing the talams. These tribes are called as Pulavar. They have assigned each of these talams to the Kunhanada talam, Mangalanada talam and Karaganachi talam. Pulavars generally write folk lore in praise of king and get his compliments for their living. Sometimes when a king is very much impressed by the Pulavar, he keeps them as one of his minister’s. Pulavars do travel in long to reach kingdoms and kings who they love and praise.

The other famous type of Tamil folk song is the villupattu. Villupattu is usually played with a special musical instrument. Two or more strings are tied to pillar in both the ends and lot of sound making ornaments like “salangai” are tied to this string. When the strings are hit, it produces music evenly. Generally, the more sophisticated instrument will be shaped as a bow. Two strings will be attached to the ends of the bow. “Veesukkol” is used to hit these strings to generate sounds from the bells like musical instruments attached to these strings. Villupattu is a type of genre that involves jokes and daily funny activities description. Sometimes, villupattu is conducted as a debate between two groups discussing heatedly about either society or family. Interesting villupattu plays with words in a tricky manner.

Tamil folk songs are quite focused into families that it was soon adapted in Tamil movies.
