Tamil songs and music are favorite melodies for many. People are of many types and each of them has unique taste in music. Catering to the varied diversity of people, Tamil songs have varied music pertaining to the taste of each people.
Elderly people love old melodies with excellent lyrics. Few elderly people listen to songs just for music and they do not worry much about the lyrics. Most of the middle-aged people go for the middle-aged family songs, where emotions are of equal mixture with that of the lyrics. They love songs for both the lyrics and music. Younger generations fall again into two types. Some of them like lyrics along with melody and some like jazz music with extra-ordinary lyrics. Though there are two different types of music liked by the younger generation, they give importance to lyrics. In this way, younger generation still like the old Tamil songs.
Old Tamil songs are favorite for many for three reasons,
- Kannadhasan writes songs that are emotionally intact to the situation and that which really braids with each and every one of our lives
- Music by famous Ilaiyaraja and M.S.Vishwananathan is so intimate that it does not spoil the lyrics but highlights them silently into the minds of people
- The visualizations of old Tamil songs are so good that they are very appropriate in contrast to the present duet or situational songs.
Old Tamil songs not only focused on duet like the present generation songs. They gave people confidence, the way to live the life and they taught people how to face any trouble that comes their way.
One great song from the film “Sumai Thaangi”,
mayakkamaa kalakkamaa
manadhilae kuzhappamaa
vaazhkkaiyil nadukkamaa
vaazhkkai enraal aayiram irukkum
vaasal dhoarum vedhanai irukkum
vandha thunbam edhu vandhaalum
vaadi ninraal oaduvadhillai
edhaiyum thaangum idhayam irundhaal
irudhi varaikkum amaidhi irukkum
aezhai manadhai maaligaiyakki
iravum pagalum kaaviyam paadi
naalaip pozhudhai iraivanukkaliththu
nadakkum vaazhvil amaidhiyaith thaedu
nadakkum vaazhvil amaidhiyaith thaedu
unakkum keezhae ullavar koadi
ninaiththup paarththu nimmadhi naadu
mayakkamaa
In this song, Kannadhasan states that confusions and worries would never stop troubles from reaching us. He stresses that in fact they might keep the troubles deep inside you. He says that the better your heart is ready to face, the better it can have peace. He also states a few principles, which can help a man to defer ego, greed and seek happiness and God. Several such songs appropriate not only for the situation in films, but also for every one of us.
When the music of M.S.Viswanathan and Ilaiayraja add sentiments to the above lyrics, they stand extra-ordinary to either bring clearance in your heart or tears in your eyes. Morality and divinity was considered more than money and living. In fact, cinema songs were a good source to teach people moral values.
